Proof that US is not part of Western civilization

The US has the only strong cadre of fundamentalists in the West, which is why we voted for the weird fundamentalist we've got as president. Proof: the best-selling "Left Behind" series (40m sold) has no British distributor because it has no conceivable readership even within that country's large and growing Evangelical movement. We really are different from the West, and not only because we don't play soccer. In fact, a case might be made that we are not part of Western civilization at all, what with being the only country in the "West" that has capital punishment, 25% of the world's prison population, terrible medical cover, and infinitely more murders than any other country. We might be a barbaric aberrant, the sick man of the West.
