Top 50 horror movies of all time

According to the magazine Total Film.
But where is "The Pit and the Pendulum," and some other Vincent Price Hammer Film horrors? This looks like a very serious list, while those Hammer films were kinda spoofy, with plenty magnificent over-the-top scenery-chewing by the wonderful Mr. Price. Horror is really close to spoofery; it takes a special talent to keep it real, since the whole genre is so outrageous.

I remember when I first saw the #1 here, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." It was a special screening at the prestigious National Film Theater in London, with a high-minded discussion afterwards about film violence and its extremities and possible harm. It was certainly the most visceral, affecting movie I had ever seen. I remember a long, stoned discussion years later in a Mercedes Benz with the guy who had written "Superfly," about how do you rate something like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," which was really REALLY mind-blowing? Is it better than "Persona" or "The Seventh Seal" because its effect is so blistering? I still don't know how to answer that question.

Yesterday I saw Brian de Palma's "Scarface," written by Oliver Stone, with Al Pacino in one of the screen's greatest performances, easily as great as anything by Brando. This movie brings up some of the same issues. It's also very visceral, way more so than the other great postwar gangster movie, "The Godfather." It's about this Cuban crook who makes it bigtime in Miami, a low-down mean fuck-you little bastard hood. It happens to be the favorite movie of the hiphop crowd, and I think they're exercising great taste in this regard. It may be a greater movie than "The Godfather" but critics may never think of it like that, because "The Godfather" is so much more stately and elegaic.
"Scarface" is pure energy, more Italian than "The Godfather" really, because it's so over-the-top operatic. Rent it if you haven't seen it. It may be the best Hollywood movie since "Citizen Kane" (with much the same cold-eyed dissection of American ambition), even if it's about such a gutter character, and not dignified and graceful like the "Godfather" series. It's so much better than anything else De Palma and Oliver Stone have done, it's almost an aberration. It reminds me of "Casablanca": such consummate pop, it's a classic. It also happens to be the perfect cocaine movie: in the midst of all the operatic melodrama, there's the utterly amoral iciness of cocaine about it, as though shot through an ever-present scrim of pure cocaine. Michele Pfeiffer as a drugged-out ice princess is platinum perfection. De Palma and Stone must have been coked-up during its creation to nail the drug ambience so brilliantly.
