Adam's blogbox: Why New York has a major Mayor and the US has a minor president

New Yorkers are a different breed of American. They live in ambiguity, in diversity, in tumult – in other words, reality.

Half the rest of America lives in a different country. They live in certainty, in non-diversity, in smugness – in other words, fantasyland.

They live in a world where they believe gay marriage is a bigger evil than 45 million Americans not covered by healthcare.

They live in a world where abortion is a bigger evil than killing more than 30,000 Iraqis, including many babies, for oil and a military presence in the Middle East.

They live in a world where it’s more important to unseat an evil dictator, Saddam Hussein, who hadn’t killed a single American, than to catch an evil terrorist, Bin-Laden, who killed over 3,000 Americans.

They live in a world where some poor pawn called Lynndie Englund has to go to jail for abusing Iraqi prisoners, while those who instigate, promote, condone, excuse and defend torture (Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, General Sanchez, and General Miller) escape all responsibility.

In other words, they live in la-la land.

Because they live in la-la land, they vote for a la-la president.

Because New Yorkers live in the real world, they vote for a real mayor.

So what New Yorkers get, is an effective, competent guy called Mike Bloomberg. A uniter not a divider, whom Republicans and Democrats alike vote for. An effective administrator who knows how to do his job and does it. A straight-shooter who doesn’t smear people for political gain, and who puts the interests of the city above his own.

What America gets, is an ineffective, incompetent guy called George Bush. A divider not a uniter, whom no Democrat would ever vote for. An ineffective administrator who doesn’t know how to do his job, and doesn’t do it. A deceiver who accuses fellow Americans of being un-patriotic and “giving comfort to the enemy.” A sleazeball who smears political enemies with lies. A nepotist who puts the interests of his cronies above the interests of America.

Because America contains a slight majority of la-la morons over sane New York-type realists, they got themselves a la-la moron administration.

If only America were more like New York, we’d all be living in a better country.
