THE SEX REBEL OF JESUSLAND, chapter 105

105. THE SECOND WITNESS.

The second witness was the abortionist. Eve guessed they had gone through her address book and found him that way. He looked very grim. Gaunt and thin, as if he hadn’t slept for months. He spoke in a dull monotone.

“You saw the accused on June seventh.”

“Yes.”

“Why did she come to you?”

“She came to me for an abortion.”

“Do you have experience in this?”

“I have done abortions.”

“How many?”

“Two or three a month for the last ten years.”

“What did you do with the accused?”

“I did an abortion.”

“How long did it take?”

“No more than half an hour.”

“How long was the accused with you?”

“About two hours. I like them to have a little lie-down afterwards.”

“What was the demeanor of the accused?”

“She was serious and matter-of-fact.”

“Did she smile?”

“Once or twice.”

“You saw her smile?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I think she was happy to get rid of it.”

“I have no further questions.”

The attorney for the defense began his questioning.

“You say you saw her smile. How many times?”

“Once or twice.”

“Well, was that once or was that twice?”

“Twice.”

“When was that?”

“Once in the beginning.”

“When you first met?”

“Yes.”

“So she was just being polite, don’t you think?”

“It’s possible, yes.”

“When did she smile again, the second time?”

“When she left.”

“So she could just have been polite again, couldn’t she?”

“It’s possible.”

“When she smiled, was it a big smile or a small smile?”

“A small smile.”

“Do you think a small smile can be read as a smile of relief?”

“It depends.”

“On what?”

“I don’t know.”

“I have no further questions.”
