Weird World: footballers outfitted with microchips
Manchester United players could be fitted with microchips so their movements on the pitch can be scrutinised. However, players are not keen as they are concerned that their off-the-pitch activities could also be monitored. A device would be injected under the players' skin. Then satellites would plot exactly where they run during a game. When the data is downloaded onto computers it will help boss Alex Ferguson fine-tune tactics and training. According to The Sun, first-team coach Brian McClair said: "One or two players were not pleased as they thought the gaffer could locate them at any time - not that any of them would be somewhere they shouldn't. It could also help him locate players who leave the ground before, during and after games."
