Adam's blogbox: hooray for Dixie Chicks

The country music audience and music programmers were ready to let bygones be bygones, maybe forget about the Dixie Chicks saying they were ashamed the President came from their home state of Texas, and maybe listen to the Dixie Chicks again ... but the songbirds came back with a single, “Not Ready To Make Nice” and an attitude that basically said, nope, we ain’t backing down, folks.

So country stations still aren’t playing their music. And although their new album has sold 1.5m copies so far, it does not look like they’ll have the usual sales for a Dixie Chicks album of 6m to 10m.

I say hooray to them. When in America does anybody give up money for principle? OK, as the best-selling country act ever they’re plenty rich already, and can live high on the hog for the rest of their lives, but they’re giving up millions by sticking to their guns.

They’ve basically told their traditional audience to stuff it, and they’re going after a new audience with music that is as much pop as country.

We music lovers from the blue states should kiss their pretty asses and, by the way, buy their album. It’s a bloody good album. It hasn’t left my CD player yet. Tuneful songs, smart lyrics, great production. They write their own material for chrissake, and play their own instruments. This is a proper band, not some Britney Spears manufactured phenom. Take a listen to the Dixie Chicks. It’s one way of expressing your disgust with Bush.

BTW, the chicks are all mighty fuckable. I know that's maybe kinda sexist, but gee, they are foxy.
