All about Alpha and Alda baboons
When the alpha male baboon gets old, he gets beaten up by all the younger baboons who remember how he beat them up. So what does the poor fella do? He bugs off. He joins another troop where he doesn't get beaten up, because he's too low on the totem pole to threaten anyone. Don't ever feel sorry if you see a broken old male among a troop of baboons. He used to be a major sonofabitch.
But there are alpha males who stay with their troops and survive, because when they were top dogs, they were nice enough to make a few friends. So they get to hang with their friends, often female, when they get old. In fact, while the other males fight one another over bonkable females, those females might be in the bushes making time with old friends.
Telling fact: the genes of these nice baboons survive in the most offspring. Moral: nice alpha baboons don't finish last. In the Darwinian battle for survival, Alan Alda males beat the Arnolds.
