OK, OK, here's that Auden poem again. He cut the "we must love one another or die" stanza, and then renounced the whole poem, but fuck him, here it is
SEPTEMBER 1, 1939
I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentionable odour of death
Offends the September night.
Accurate scholarship can
Unearth the whole offence
From Luther until now
That has driven a culture mad,
Find what occurred at Linz,
What huge imago made
A psychopathic god:
I and the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those to whom evil is done

Exiled Thucydides knew

Each language pours its vain

In an euphoric dream;

Is this the counterfoil to sweetest
music? The source of poetry that
seeing the clock stopped, says,
The clock has stopped

and hears the sound of lakewater
splashing — that is now stone.

WAKING EARLY SUNDAY MORNING

of his ghost-written rhetoric!
No weekends for the gods now. Wars
flicker, earth licks its open sores,
fresh breakage, fresh promotions, chance
assassinations, no advance.
Only man thinning out his kind
sounds through the Sabbath noon, the blind
swipe of the pruner and his knife
busy about the tree of life ...
Pity the planet, all joy gone
from this sweet volcanic cone;
peace to our children when they fall

orbiting forever lost
in our monotonous sublime.
LANGUAGE is thought expressed. Poetry is language compressed. Nothing beats a classic poem, boys and girls. Nothing. Not even getting head from the lips of Sophia Loren, or the tongue of Brad Pitt. Nothing. Absolutely fucking nothing.
