109. RACHEL BEGINS HER TESTIMONY.

Rachel’s eyes were red, and her facial skin scruffy and rough. She held her head stiff and forward, her eyes looking down. To Eve it seemed as though Rachel had been suffering a lot as a V-doll.

“How long have you known the accused?”

“Twelve years.”

“You are a classified V-doll?”

“Yes. First I was a Scarlet. But not anymore.”

“And she is a female Beloved.”

“Yes.”

“You were friends.”

“Yes.”

The court had a sharp intake of breath.

“She flaunted the law openly.”

“Yes.”

“So she was already a law breaker before the present circumstances?”

“Did she tell you about her pregnancy?”

Eve looked at Rachel. No, Rachel couldn’t. She wouldn’t. For the briefest of moments, Rachel looked at Eve.

“Answer the question. Did the accused tell you about her pregnancy?”
