On my non-relationship to music
What music do I listen to? "New Sounds" on NPR if I’m at home at 11 pm, and that’s pretty much it. I don’t find rock, pop and rap new enough for me. Not the way bands broke new upon the shores of Elvis and Chuck Berry. When did bands stop mattering? The 70s? I remember how one awaited every new Beatles or Dylan album as a universal and culturally important happening, as an occasion that went beyond the sheer joy (oh, the abundance of it!) to an intellectual event. It would somehow reframe your consciousness in the world. Does this happen today with kids picking up on 50 Cent? Do rappers reorganize your world from album to album?
