To feed or not to feed the dead
I guess the system works. After 22 judges in 8 courts have said she should be allowed to die, she'll be allowed to die. Plus, the Republicans and the President get to play Big Hero to their right-to-life base. The only people I feel genuinely sorry for in the whole brouhaha are Terri Schiavo's parents, who simply cannot accept that she's been dead all this time, because a braindead person can still open her eyes and look alive. Maybe it's best she is allowed to die, so they can start living with the certainty that she is indeed gone. Meanwhile, the Republicans in Congress are splintering over it. "My party is demonstrating that they are for states' rights unless they don't like what states are doing," said Representative Christopher Shays of Connecticut, one of five House Republicans who voted against the bill. "This couldn't be a more classic case of a state responsibility. This Republican Party of Lincoln has become a party of theocracy. There are going to be repercussions from this vote. There are a number of people who feel that the government is getting involved in their personal lives in a way that scares them." Amazing: a withering critique of today's fundamentalist Republican Party from inside the elephant.
