Israeli Army to destroy infrastructure after settlers leave; and the scarcity of forgiveness

I just heard on the news that after all the settlers leave Gaza -- or are removed by the Army -- the Army are going to stay behind to destroy all the infrastructure. Why?

This makes me think of the woman who forgave the young man who threw a frozen turkey through her windshield and messed up her face so she has to have many operations. She got him a sentence of only 6 months -- he could've been stuck with 25 years. Now that woman: she would not have destroyed the infrastructure of the settlements. Her name is Victoria Ruvolo. I think she deserves some kind of medal. Speaking for myself, I can't imagine being that forgiving. Not that I would've wanted the kid to sit for 25 years, but 5 years, sure, for mutilating my face. Victoria must be one very special lady.

Now that we're on about the milk of human kindness, in all too scarce supply these days, here's a very touching bit from the NY Times coverage on the settlers being pulled out of Gaza:

Dr. Eyad Sarraj, a Palestinian psychiatrist in Gaza City who was made a refugee as a boy in 1948, said of the evacuation, "It provokes feelings of victimization and a kind of feeling we are all victimized by the whole thing." He recalled watching television with his wife and friends on Tuesday. "One Israeli settler lady was talking about that she planted some trees, and she wanted the people behind to look after them," he said. He looked over at his wife, he remembered. "She was smiling," he said, "and at the same time she had tears. So it tells you about the conflicting emotions."

OK, NOW I'm off to have a quiet little cry for all the pain in the world. And all the good people who make it bearable.
